The architectural hearth reminds us of home, stirring our minds towards the centering space of domestic life and summoning warm feelings as our mind recalls the heat of the fireplace. ‘Thermographic hearths’ are inspired by the architectural elements that keep us warm in the winter. These three chimney forms huddle together against the cold Winnipeg landscape, allowing viewers to take shelter below their ghostly skeletons. Constructed of simple timber framing, and metal mesh they provide a familiar silhouette to those walking down the forks.

Clad in a colourful shingling derived from a thermal infrared scan of a fireplace, their three centers emit a radiant glow of yellows and golds transition to violets and blues where the scan detects the lower emissive heat as the chimney meets the cold air above. As walkers move in and out of the hearths, their shadows flicker behind the translucent strip curtain shingles as if shadows flickering in a fire.
